I want to know if anyone has thoughts about Public-Private partnerships for building utility infrastructure in impoverished areas in Sub-Saharan Africa, whether they can be more effective than other organizational initiatives in providing fresh water.
Recently, in Senegal the JM Eagle Clean Water Senegal project was launched in conjunction with Columbia University's Earth Institute and its Millenium Villages - an initiative that was designed with the aim of ending extreme poverty in rural communities throughout Africa. With the installation of the new water infrastructure built by this partnership, Senegal will be able to produce more agriculture near its coastline, an area that previously only had brackish water available, and there is already evidence that villagers (where the new water infrastructure exists) are now able to participate in profitable work, rather than spending their time gathering clean water.
I feel that Public-Private partnerships like this could the key to addressing one of the many aspects of poverty in developing nations throughout Africa and elsewhere.
